Monterey, Friday & Saturday, August, 17th & 18th 2001

RM Monterey Sports Car Auction 2001

Location

Doubletree Hotel, Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey, CA

Auction report

It’s show time ! In contrast to the more restrained English auction houses, Bonhams & Brooks and Christie’s,  RM Auctions offered a real show and an atmosphere, so that Americans (and others) could be motivated to buy cars for more money they’d have expected before. A mouth-watering list of cars, including such great pieces like a Ferrari 410 Sport (s/n 0596CM) or a very original Maserati 200 SI (s/n 2401), invited them to spend their money, too.

Although the Friday sale almost flopped, RM could sell more cars on Saturday than the two auction houses mentioned above. Larry Bowman and Bruce Lustman battled it out, bidding on the 410 S up to $3,475 Mio. Bowman won like last year, where he bought the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe for $ 4,4 Mio at RM’s Monterey Auction.

In contrast, the bidding on the Maserati 200 SI was a short ceremony. Dr. Wolf Zweifler and Philippe Olzcyk, to name the opponents, fought for a highly desirable car, which sat over twenty years in a Japanese collection. Though in need of a restoration, Wolf Zweifler could bag a bargain for $ 550k (plus buyer’s prem. 605k). Well done.

The Ferrari 250 GT LWB ‘TdF (s/n 0911GT), a car with very good history and a quality restoration from DK Engineering, could find a new European home for a high $ 1,265 Mio.

Interestingly, two other Ferrari did not sell. The first one, a 512 BB LM Silhouette (s/n 32129), owned by Swiss Industrialist  "Lista" and Gentelman Race Driver Fredy Lienhard, could attract $350k, though eligible for the American Ferrari Shell Historic Challenge, and the other one, a very early 166 Scaglietti Spider (s/n 016I) stopped at $830k.

Bidders, who were interested in buying a good Jaguar E-Type S1 Roadster could spend either $34,650 or --- on Saturday $115k for a clean example. Sometimes, life is strange.

Bonhams & Brooks Quail Lodge Auction 2001

Saturday, 18th August 2001

Location

Quail Lodge Centre, Carmel Valley, CA

Auction

It seems that the time is (still ?) not right for Bonhams & Brooks to establish its Quail Lodge Sale between the other Monterey Auctions. A lot of important cars, like the Ferrari 500 Mondial PF Spider (s/n 0408MD) or the 250 GT SWB Speciale (s/n 3469GT), did not sell.

The Ferrari 250 GT LWB ‘TdF’ (s/n 1139GT) offered by Bonhams & Brooks sold for $792k. Compared to 0911GT, which sold for $473k (!) more, one could see the difference between a car with very good race history plus restoration and a car without all that.

Christie’s Pebble Beach Auction 2001

Sunday, August, 19th 2001

Location

The Pebble Beach Equestrian Center, Pebble Beach, CA

Auction

Before the Christie’s Auction had begun I heard some people say that on Sunday there will be more serious buyers than at any other auction this weekend. Christie’s offer looked very promising and easily could be declared as the best offer compared by the other auction houses.

But afterwards some top cars like the Aston Martin DB3S surprisingly failed to sell. It took its own strange way already with Lot 9. This Aston Martin DB 4 Convertible was declared as a ”No sale” although a bidder was motivated enough to spend $160k on it.
The auctioneer had my sympathy as well while he was trying to sell the wonderful Alfa Romeo P3 Grand Prix car. But the bidding ended to soon at $ 1,4 Mio.

In contrast to this, the exceptional Maserati A6 G-2000 Frua Spider, longtime owned by Jay Jessup, did sell very well for $330,500 and while the Ferrari 340 America Ghia Coupe (s/n 0148A) failed to sell at Poulain Le Fur’s December 2000 Sale, Christie’s could find a new owner for $393k.

In the end Christie’s sale total was 65% by lot and in excess of $11 Mio. Look out for the lots you’ve missed:
