Palm Beach, 27th of January, 2017

The second day of this year’s Cavallino Classic was spent again on the nearby Palm Beach International Raceway. After the free practice sessions yesterday finally the hunt for the time started this morning with the timed practice sessions. In two classes for Drum and Disc Braked Ferrari and Maserati the drivers set their time for the line-up in the main races the afternoon. After some showers during the night leaving a wet track in the morning fortunately the dark clouds over the former Moroso raceway did not produce the same weather chaos as last year when the second track day had to be shortened due to heavy rain.

After lunch first the Drum Brake class including two pre-war cars were lined up at the pit wall to do the first race. Led by the Ferrari 412MI driven by Chris Cox (who drove the 412 in this race to be able to drive his 250 GTO in the second) the two Ferrari 250 GT Boano and the 2 250 TdF had some track time with very even drivers pairings in the later cars giving some overtaking over the short race. It was finally Charles Wegner in the TdF and Jack Thomas keeping the upper hand over their sister cars.

Also just 5 cars were lined up in the disc brake race with the 2 512 BBLM of Jim Fuchs and Todd Morici competing against each other just as the 250 GTO, the 365 GTB Competizione and the Maserati Birdcage. At the end it was Todd Morici keeping the upper hand winning this race after several changes of the race leader in the first laps.

Going back to the paddocks one could see a few cars of the following concours such as the streamlined Maserati Birdcage among others.

The day was finalized with the award giving ceremony for the performance on the track with the trophies given by Brian Redman before the day ended with a glass of wine near the ocean in the wonderful setting of the Breakers.

Tomorrow will be the big day when finally the chosen Ferrari Cars will be seen lined-up at the lawn of the breakers to find the most beautiful and original example rather than simply the fastest car-drivers combination. Early in the morning the cars will be lined-up in the driveway before entering the three lawns with cars of different eras. Although a few cars already leaked their appearance the day before one can be curious whether the field will be making up for two more quit race days.

Tomorrow at the same time we will know who became the Best of Show award and the numerous class awards of this year’s 26th Cavallino Classic.
