#138
David Piper:
"A steering arm in 6167 worked its way loose during the May 1968 Targa Florio, causing him to completely lose control. He ended up hitting the cement base of one of the Kilometer markers on the side of the road. The car flipped onto its roof and the chassis + body were completely demolished, and written off.
A mechanic was told to really tighten up the steering arms due to some issue with them becoming lose on the rough Targa Florio roads. Apparently, the mechanic then proceeded to mistakenly loosen up one (or both) of these steering arms."

Paul Vestey:
"This 1968 Targa accident became a big problem for 6167’s upcoming June 1968 Le Mans entry (1968 Le Mans ended up getting moved to September due to French worker strikes and civil unrest)."

6167 had already been entered by Paul Vestey in 1968 Le Mans! Paul Vestey had to scramble to quickly locate and acquire a replacement 250 LM. As such, he purchased Drummond's LM 6053, removed the 6053 welded tag (bearing 6053’s chassis number stamping) from the rear lateral chassis member, and then installed the engine from 6167 (i.e., the engine for 6167 had already been inspected by the Le Mans organizers and approved/certified. Note the little twin scrutineer stampings just to the right of the Engine No. stamping, etc.).

1968/mid - Piero Drogo’s Carrozzeria Sports Cars, Modena, removes engine and gearbox for use in 6053.
1969/jun/04 - Stefano Sebastiani, Rome, IT. Paid Lit. 1.0 Mio to Paul Vestey for
“remains of Ferrari 275LM, chassis number 6167” still stored at Carrozzeria Sports Cars.
Bill of Sale
Replica #1 „6167 R“:
Sebastiani tasks Autosport and Bachelli to build a 250 LM replica intended for racing, with a new tubular chassis, alloy body, and various original parts.
On 18th Sep 91, this replica is sold on to Vincenzo Scanduri as „6167“. After legal disputes, fake chassis plate, original parts, and papers revert to Sebastiani in July 1995.
The remaining replica #1 is used by Scanduri to build a “6167 R”, which is sold to Switzerland, then sold by RM Auctions in October 2009 (red), and later registered „AH 51 59“ in Maastricht, NL.
