1960 saw the launch of the 250 GTE 2+2, which was the first
Ferrari with reasonable four seat accommodation. There had been
Ferrari models designated 2+2 during the fifties, but in reality their
rear seats were really only suitable for small children, or adults for
short journeys due to the limited legroom. The debut of the 250
GTE 2+2 was unusual, as instead of being presented at a major
motor show, its first public appearance was as the course car for
the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in June 1960.
50 years after its appearance at Le Mans, and on the same
weekend as the 2010 running of the French endurance race, a
gathering of the model was organised by Yvo Alexander in the
Netherlands, to commemorate this Golden Anniversary. The
commemoration took the form of a touring rally, starting in the
early morning of Sunday June 13th 2010 in front of Café Loetje in
Laren www.loetjelaren.nl, where the participants had a welcome
coffee and spent some time getting to know each other, with the
common thread being their individual GTE’s. From here they took
a scenic drive through the woods of the Gooi region, passing
special sites of historic and cultural interest, like the Royal
Palace in Soestdijk, heading towards the lunch location at the
Restaurant de Salentein in Nijkerk www.desalentein.nl. Around
18.00 some of the group drove back to Café Loetje for a final few
drinks to celebrate a special day with their Ferrari 250 GTEs.
