Carmel-by-the-Sea, Tuesday 16th of August 2011
Early in the morning the day started with the beginning of the
Quail Rallye at the Quail Lodge. The hills were still lying in the fog
when the participants met for the breakfast and the last
instructions for the ride of the day. Among the participating cars a
Ferrari 250 GTO and a 166 MM beside 2 Superamericas were
joined by a few pre-war cars, post war sport cars like a pair of 300
SL plus a few new ones.
After a first look at the cars and the start for the tour of the day
one headed for Carmel-by-the-Sea where today the Monterey
week started with the Concours on the Avenue. Being one of the
few events entirely for free this attracted many visitors to the
centre on Carmel where the cars were lined up by classes.
Beside several classes for Porsches of different age several
Ferrari classes featured the Daytona, the 275 GTB and others.
Mixed car classes included hot rods, American muscle cars and
Italian sports cars. At the end Robert Lee´s Ferrari 250 GT Boano
Coupé with special body was awarded Best of Show. Not just the
details of this one-off vowed the judges but also the fact that it
was bought by Mr.Lee directly by the factory and he remained the
single owner of this car until today.
We have put together a small preview of the day and will report on
the forthcoming auctions tomorrow from the previews at RM and
Gooding to round up the car at the jet centre party at McCalls.
