Laguna Seca, 9th - 10th of August
The Monterey Classic Car Week is well under way with the first
race meeting of the week at the Laguna Seca Raceway. A week
before the actual Motorsport Reunion the first arrivals to the
Monterey Peninsula had a fun weekend at the famous racetrack
with no less than 12 different race groups sorted by type of car
and year ranging from the pre-war cars to Formula Atlantic,
Trans-Am or Imsa Cars. Unfortunately the first pre-war group was
rather small with just about half a dozen cars running the practice
on Saturday and the race on Sunday but other classes had a
great entry list giving a good impression what to expect the
following weekend. Most interesting races were the IMSA cars
including several Turbocharged Porsche from the 934 and 935
series plus a few 956 and 962. Almost as powerful were the huge
engined Can-Am cars mostly from McLaren blasting the by the pit
lane on both days.

Not just at the concours but also on the track is Maserati the
featured marque this year and several Maserati Birdcage were
running in the Sports Racing Car group and even more are
expected next days. For those early arrivals at the car week the
start in Laguna Seca was well worth a visit to hear and smell the
cars on the race track before they will be admired in the next
days on the various lawns in Carmel and Pebble Beach.
On Monday on can take a last deep breath before the action
really starts with several events every day. Tuesday will see the
Concours on the Avenue, Wednesday the auction previews of no
less than 6 different auction houses having the most expensive
line-up ever in Monterey with almost 600 Million $ estimated. In
the afternoon the official cover shot of this year Motorsport
Reunion will be set up at Laguna Seca with a great selection of
Maserati celebrating the centenary before the McCall Jet Centre
Party will finalize the day.
Thursday will be the day of the Pebble Beach Tour before
Bonhams is opening the auction marathon of the weekend with
the sale of the Ferrari from the Maranello Rosso collection and
especially the 250 GTO is rumoured to set a new world record
with more than 60 Million Dollar.
Friday will see the Quail Motorsport Gathering and the first
auction day at RM before Gooding is joining in the next day and
while the race fans are back at Laguna Seca or at the Concorso
Italiano during the day. Sunday will finally see the highlight of the
week with the Pebble Beach Concours making this again a very
exhausting but satisfying week in California.
For those not making the trip over to the US we will keep you up
to date with the highlights during the next days.
