Tempting bidders were multiple models spanning the ages from some of the greatest marques in automobile
history. A perfect illustration of this is the list of top-selling cars, which included a 2015 McLaren and a 1928
Mercedes-Benz.
Starting things off with a bang, the 2015 McLaren P1 was offered near the beginning of the sale and quickly
rose to achieve a new world auction record for the model when it was bought by a young American family for
$2,090,000.
Worldwide interest in the right 300 SLs remained strong when the well-documented alloy-engined 1962
Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster made a healthy $1,485,000. And demonstrating the steady interest in
superb Daytonas, the 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta with less than 9,000 miles from new sold for
$1,155,000, creating a new live auction record for the model. Also from the Tri Star brand, a rare and
immaculate 1928 Mercedes-Benz 630K La Baule Transformable was the subject of robust bidding from clients
in the audience and on the telephones and ultimately sold for $973,500, while a beautiful 1935 Hispano-Suiza
K6 Cabriolet brought $869,000.
Other strong results were achieved by models from Aston Martin and BMW with a 1964 DB5 and 1955 DB2/4
Drophead making $781,000 and $396,000 respectively, while the iconic 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile”
made $341,000 and a new world auction record for the model.
Said Bonhams’ US Head of Motoring, Jakob Greisen, “What we saw this year in Scottsdale was that the
‘best-in-class’ cars are attracting strong interest. We sold a lot of very good cars across a broad spectrum
and collectors are responding to prime examples that are sensitively priced.”
James Knight, Bonhams’ Global Head of Motoring, commented “We’ve hosted some very successful sales in
America and Europe recently, and Scottsdale produced a fine and respectable sell-through rate. The collector
car market is robust and collectors are willing to pay prime levels – indeed records – for the best examples.”
