Palm Beach, 24th of January

Today the 25th Cavallino Classic came to an end with the multi-marque concours at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. A memorable jubilee edition of the leading Ferrari Concours event saw another day full of highlights at the Classic Sports Sunday in a year of very changeable weather conditions. After heavy rain on Friday on the race track, heavy wind of the storm through at the Breakers on Saturday this morning saw some freezing temperatures very unusual for Florida.

Just as the day before the first cars entered the lawn behind the club right after sunrise for a spectacular line-up. Beside many of the Ferrari known from the day before especially the featured marque Alfa Romeo was extremely well presented with no less than 6 of the very high valuable 8-cylinder models with 3 of the 2.3 and 2.9 litre engines each.

The two Touring Berlinettas on the 8C 2900 B chassis seen the day before at the Breakers were joined by another long chassis Touring bodied car, this time a Spider. Furthermore the smaller capacity engined 2300 saw two Zagato bodied car aside the MM Touring Spider as raced on the Palm Beach International Raceway to days earlier. But not only pre-war Alfa Romeos were present but also a spectacular T33 Periscopica, a SZ and even a very rare TZ2 were parked near the pool.

The two Touring Berlinettas were split by no less than this year’s Pebble Beach winning Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A with Ramseier body again brought by the Patterson Collection to Palm Beach and one could just imagine the agony of choice for the jury to decide for Best of Show with two former PB winner, the immaculate example of the Collier Collection and the Spider of former PB winner Sam Mann. At the end it was Jim Patterson leaving the ballroom after the awards lunch with the biggest trophy of the day giving this car another BoS just within a few months.

But not only had the pre-war classics drawn much attention as two examples old and new were surrounded by the public all day. Especially the light green metallic Fiat 8V Supersonic was not only admired by the petrol heads but also by a lot of women who enjoyed the stylish lines of the Ghia design. Its contemporary counterpart was the Ferrari F60 that is intended in a special edition of only ten examples standing just next to the Fiat.

The field was rounded off by a good selection of Mercedes Benz 300 SL, several Jaguar from the XK and E-Type series and some Porsche ranging from the 356 to the 1980s supercar, the 959.
As usual the Sunday show ended early after the lunch when the first cars left the green so the owners could enjoy a cold sunny afternoon either at the hotel or at home.

As mentioned was this Cavallino Classic very remarkable for several reasons. On one side might be the weather but more important the superb selection of cars over all the days. Some might say that the track days do not see as many cars as they saw years ago when they were part of the Ferrari Challenge and many of the cars are regulars to the former Moroso race track but one should not forget that one rarely sees 3 250 GTO, 2 250 TR, 375 MM and even the Mille Miglia winning 290 MM at the same venue racing against each other.

The special display of the former Best of Show winning cars at the Breakers showed the diversity of the cars with the prancing horse as well as the quality of the concours as some of the cars on display could be easily ranked within the most important designs in the history of Ferrari.
Certainly the 25th edition will be hard to top in near future but as the event is as popular as ever before attracting visitors from all around the globe one could certainly look forward to next year’s edition.

For the moment we have some preview galleries from all the four days of Cavallino Classic 25, more extended galleries will follow in a few days when the busy week with the auctions in Scottsdale and the following Retromobile in Paris leave enough time to sort all the pictures. Especially the Retromobile sale of Artcurial will be of particular interest for all Ferraristi when the 335 S of Wolfgang Berghe von Trips will be sold, a car that would certainly suit Cavallino Classic 26 as flagship.
