Monaco, 13th - 15th of May, 2016

Already for the 10th time the Automobile Club of Monaco organized the Historic Grand Prix on the most famous F1 track in the world. The very demanding non-permanent track through the Mediterranean principality is an institution since the early 1920s and one of the few tracks that will most likely never disappear from the modern F1 calendar. All the best of every era were fighting to win this drivers course at least once in their life to line up among the greatest. For amateurs there is normally no chance to challenge the narrow streets, unlike on permanent race tracks no track days or regular race meetings give the possibility to look how it is like to drive “with a helicopter in the living room” (a famous quote from Nelson Piquet). But every second year the ACO gives the more or less ambitious drivers the opportunity to meet their limits in the narrow streets between the guard rails with the famous places like St. Devote, Casino Square, the hairpin, tunnel, swimming pool chicane or Rascasse. Like in the previous 9 editions certainly the 7 different race groups were filled with precious machinery and especially the very active British racing scene was travelling to Monaco in full force. Every major race car service shop for F1 cars have sent out their mechanics to look after many cars in the provisional paddock in the harbor and the permanent pit buildings as used by the F1.

The groups ranged from the pre-war machinery (this time only as a demonstration run) to the F1 cars of the 1970s, additional a huge field of Formula Junior cars and a large sports car grid as raced in the 1952 race when the championship was thinned and unable to provide a full GP grid.

After arriving on Thursday and Friday morning the first practice sessions were held Friday afternoon and as some rain was announced for the next day the practice in the dry was very important to getting used to the ever changing track and the grip on the different racing lines. Also the spectators and journalists had to adapt to the changing surrounding in the city as every time new buildings and different setting of the photographers holes in the fences give some new challenges.

Fortunately the rain did not come down on Saturday as intended, just a few drops of water made the track slippery for a few laps but did not affect the programme. From the previous editions the regular visitor is used to either longer breaks in several red flag incidents, especially in the first outings some unexperienced drivers have to face their limits, some of them even in cars they are not used to, due a late purchase of cars already entered. But fortunately just a few accidents were more serious and nobody was seriously injured. As the organizers learned their lessons from previous events some larger gaps in between the races reserve time for incidents without putting the entire schedule on delay. This also means that in between the races the numerous visitors (apparently Sunday was sold out and the grand stands were very good visited) had time to refresh.

Unsurprisingly most of the races were won by British drivers and the Queen was saved numerous times during the final Sunday races leaving few victories to others, the last race of the most modern F1 cars was finally won by Alex Caffi for Monaco itself.

Unfortunately the May is a very busy month leaving just a few moments to process all the impressions and many moved over to the Mille Miglia or/and Villa d´Este Concours that will be held this weekend.

We have found some time to put up a small preview gallery of what will come in a few days with a full race report featuring all the cars on track this weekend. We hope you enjoy and come back for more images of this fantastic race weekend in sunny Monaco.
