The star of the sale was lot 176, the 1974 3-litre Porsche Carrera RSR, which sold above estimate for €1 769
300 / $2 017 002. The impressive provenance of this competition car included extensive racing history in the
US between 1974 and 1986 (8 times in the Sebring 12 Hours and 7 in the Daytona 24 Hours). The car will join
the collection of a European buyer.
The Monegasque residents were out in force for this new event. The room was filled with some 350 bidders,
and bids were plentiful throughout the afternoon. Results included 5 records for lots 104, 122, 126, 206, as
well as lot 111, a 1993 Peugeot 205 cabriolet by Pininfarina, that fetched €25 200 / $28 728 (estimate : €10
000–20 000). Setting the tone of the auction, this price reflected the high demand for popular cars, both
youngtimer and historic, that sparked some determined bidding battles. The 1959 Fiat Nuova 500 convertible
(lot 142) changed hands for €27 600 / $31 464, almost double its estimate. In the early afternoon, a 1982
Mehari 4x4 (lot 102) sold above estimate for €44 400 / $50 616, and at the end of the evening, a 2000 Mini
Cooper S Works (lot 213) fetched €36 000 / $41 040.
Highlights of the “ Sport and GT “ section included the 2005 Saleen S7R (lot 190) that sold for €431 700 /
$492 138, as well as the 1982 Renault 5 Turbo competition client “ Cévennes “ (lot 189), that made €167 900 /
$191 406. A fine tribute to the sport of motor racing at one of its most foremost venues.
An indispensable part of the scenery along the Mediterranean coast, cabriolets attracted much attention in
the sale, including the highly elegant 1963 Jaguar E-Type roadster that fetched €167 900 / $191 406 including
premium.
Motor cars displaying the three-pointed star were also in demand, especially the youngtimers. The 1990
Mercedes-Benz 190 E (lot 175) fetched nearly three times its estimate, selling for €137 900 / $157 206 and a
1953 Mercedes-Benz « Adenauer » (lot 201) sparked a bidding frenzy in the saleroom, selling above its top
estimate for €68 400 / $77 976, This autumn, Artcurial will hold a sale dedicated to the famous German
marque, in association with Mercedes-Benz France.
The sale started with three automobilia lots, two of which honoured motor racing heroes. Lot 1, Michael
Schumacher’s Ferrari racing overalls, fetched €9 100 / $10 374, and lot 3, Ayrton Senna’s personal
motorcycle helmet, sold for €20 200 / $23 028.
