The foregoing race was part of a fifteen race programme, which also included a tribute race to Sir Stirling
Moss, being the first race of the meeting on the Friday evening, previously the Kinrara Trophy, renamed the
Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy in his memory, not only for his contribution to British motor sport, but also for
his support at the Goodwood Revival Meeting through the years. There were also races for classic up to 1966
motorcycles, another being the John Whitmore Trophy for sixties Mini Coopers, plus the always popular St
Mary’s Trophy Race for fifties saloon cars, races for formula One, Formula Junior, sports cars of differing
genres, through to the thundering Cobras, E-Types and the like in the highlight RAC TT Celebration Race on
the Sunday afternoon. Almost without exception there was plenty of close racing, a few skirmishes,
fortunately none serious, other than some damaged metalwork, which kept the spectators in the packed
grandstands and around the circuit perimeter fences around the circuit enthralled throughout the weekend.
As always the event, apart from a great variety of machinery, attracts famous names from the world of motor
sport. A great crowd favourite this year, making his historic racing and Goodwood Revival debut, was the 2009
F1 World Champion Jenson Button, who drove a DK Engineering entered AC Cobra with Alex Buncombe in
the RAC TT Tribute race, unfortunately retiring with a misfire when well placed. Other famous names on the
roll call included the always entertaining five time Le Mans 24 Hour Race winner Emanuele Pirro, Alex and
Martin Brundle, Karun Chandhok, further Le Mans 24 Hour race winners in the form of Jean-Eric Vergne (also
a double Formula E Champion), Neel Jani, Andre Lotterer and Romain Dumas, together with many others,
plus star of TV and films Rowan Atkinson and multiple Olympic medal winning cyclist turned racing driver Sir
Chris Hoy.
There were a trio of celebrations over the course of the weekend, notably a Tribute to Sir Stirling Moss
featuring a track parade of the multitude of cars associated with him through the years, including both his
Goodwood Tourist Trophy winning Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinettas. This tribute was to have been held in
2020, but was carried over to this year due to the cancellation of last year’s event. There was also another
feature that was to have taken place in 2020, the 70th anniversary of BRM, with a display and track parades
of the cars from Bourne ranging from the howling V16 of 1950 to the 1974 P201 F1 car. On the Sunday
afternoon there was a “Victory Parade”, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the 1946 London Victory Parade
and also to mark the UK’s fight against Covid, with armed forces bands, representatives of the police, fire and
NHS services, with a broad variety of period civil commercial and military vehicles also taking part.
Theatre is all part of the magic of the Goodwood Revival Meeting, with perennial favourites like the “Glam
Cabs” girls, the military camps, the “Mods & Rockers”, the road working crew, together with an expansive
display of hot rods in an expanded Gasoline Alley, together with track parades each day, their former spot
being taken by classic racing pedal cycles with a Tour de France theme, presented by Eroica Britannia. The
Drivers Club has a different them each year, and this year it resembled a Las Vegas casino, with a line-up of
period Amercan cars fronting it. There were also all the other popular features including the Walls Ice Cream
“beach”, with ice cream served from a vintage Rolls Royce ice cream van, a Bonhams auction, “Over The
Road” with its broad array of vendors, fun fair, Butlins rock n roll ballroom, plus new for this year a Revival
Cinema presented by Sky Cinema, together with a massive classic car parking area, a show in itself, plus
plenty more besides. Another spectacular weekend for all petrol heads in the bucolic Sussex countryside.
