Paris, 25th April, 2022

Finally, we are back in Paris in April for this year’s Tour Auto. After the last summer edition, the tour through the French countryside went back to its usual date in April when Paris is surrounded by the yellow rape fields that should become our background for the next days.

231 cars were entered at this year’s edition and as the Grand Palais is still not finished after its renovation the cars were lined up in the parc d´exposition that hosted the Retromobile earlier in March. The field is again a very colorful mix of cars although one has to acknowledge that the overall quality is slightly reduced to the Tours a decade ago when several Ferrari 12 cylinders were lined up. The days of several Ferrari 250 GTO are long gone but we are now down to a single 250 GT SWB, two Lussos and 5 275 GTBs, cars you could barely count years ago. It is very obvious that the reliable Porsche 911 has taken over the rally as most of the competition cars are coming from Stuttgart, but with a single 904 also the times of the prototypes is gone. On the earlier side the Jaguar E-Type and several AC Cobras are the usual suspects for the aim of the overall victory.

The featured car this year is the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Competizione Group IV that won the classic Tour de France some 50 years ago. 5 examples were lined up but unfortunately 2 of them will not hit the road but were purely for display.

Tomorrow the cars will leave early in the morning for a neutralized stage to the Chateau de Rambouillet where the Tour will officially start direction South. The first stop of the day will be also the first race of the week with the visit of the Circuit de Bugatti in Le Mans, the first of three race tracks in addition to 14 special stages the drivers have to compete at.

After that we will go direction west towards the Atlantic coast for the first overnight in La Baulle. Wednesday we will be at the Val de Vienne race track and arrive in the evening at Limoges.

Thursday will be no track day but 3 special stages on the way to Bordeaux. Friday will be towards Pau with the visit of the Nogaro Circuit and the last day finally will lead to Andorra. For the first time in 20 years the cars will arrive in the highest capitol of Europe to conclude this year’s event.

The next day will give us the annual battle in the competition classes with the usual suspect in their favorite’s roles but as well as the regularity in different speed categories, something even less predictable than the racers facing reliability issues every now and then.

The weather forecast looks very promising in the first half of the week and the second half is not yet decided. But rain or sun, we will try to follow the entire tour and keep you posted about the things to come.
