|
1975 - Mike Pinto, Bridgeport,
CT, USA acquired s/n 0383GT sometime around 1975.
At this time, the car had already been
extensively damaged by fire, purportedly
in the Detroit riots. The car had been
reduced to a rolling shell with most of
the alloy body panels still intact.
The engine and transmission were never
with the car during this time. The
car was stored, and it remained in that
condition from that time until its sale

Anthony Kalil remembers ...
"John
Collins offered $1,000,000 million for the car, as
everybody was assuming that the prices would continue to
skyrocket. The car was also the prototype TdF, so John
thought it would be a solid investment. Unfortunately,
the market crashed just after my father sold the car, so
John ended up holding for some time, and finally selling
it at a huge loss.
I
remember John flew to Florida and he drove to my fathers
building with some associates, and looked at the car. He
confirmed his 1 million offer. My father said that it
would take 1 million and $25k. John passed on the deal,
and drove off. A minute later, he pulled back in and
asked my father why he would blow a million dollar sale
for 25k. My father explained to John that my mother
laughed at him when he paid 30k for a burned out hulk
(the car was actually much better than most of the
history documents) and he swore he would get 1 million
for it one day. He knew that once he paid his friend 25k
for introducing him to Collins, he would be short of the
1 million mark. John laughed and agreed. The car was
promptly shipped over to the UK." |
