Laguna Seca 14th-16th of October 2011
In its forth edition the Porsche Rennsport Reunion was held at the
famous racetrack in California for the first time after previous
editions on the other side of the continent in Lime Rock and
Daytona. The move to the new location of the 3-days event by
inviting Porsche North America shows the importance of the west
coast market as the Reunion was also intended to present the all
new 911 to the North American public and there are few
possibilities to reach more aficionados of the marque than with a
huge race meeting. Although California is known for being a
forerunner of the “green idea” with many hybrid cars on the roads
there is also still a huge fanbase for the sports cars from
Zuffenhausen and so it was not a surprise that the reunion
attracted more than 35.000 spectators. Not few of them arrived in
their own Porsche so the corral was packed on all days with a
wide variety of street cars ranging from the popular early 356 to
the latest 997, Cayman, Boxter and Cheyenne so the walk
through the infield was already heaven for all Porsche lovers.
Various suppliers of parts and automobilia could be found there
as well, but main attraction were without doubt the races in
different classes over the weekend.
The Reunion unofficially started on Thursday when most of the
cars and huge race trailers arrived in the paddocks to prepare for
the weekend. This was also the time to do the official group shot
in front of the bridge between turn 3 and 4, also known from the
theme shots from the Monterey Motorsport Reunions in August.
37 selected significant race cars of all eras were lined up in rows
by 3 or 4 cars sorted by type to give an impressive overview and
the symbolic shot forever linked with the event.
A walk through the paddocks showed well over 300 race cars with
most of them wearing a race number so spectacular races could
be expected at the following days as many owners prefer to race
them over just showing up with them. The races were divided in 8
different classes ranging from the early Gmünd cars in the
same-titled race to the latest Cup racers of the 997 line.
Friday morning started with the practice sessions of the Gmünd
Cup for 356s with race history, spyders from the 550 and 718
range (although none of the many 550s present during the
weekend actually took part in the race), the beautiful Abarth
Porsches and a few special cars including Poopers. Fastest of all
the practice sessions and the race on Saturday was the Porsche
engined Bobsy-Porsche from 1964 that was also one of the
youngest cars in that class. On the other side of the range the
Glöckner Porsche from 1952 was not that fast but still one of the
most interesting cars to see racing. The Gmund Cup was also on
of the two classes already raced on Saturday as several of the
entrants headed for the Race Car Classic Concours at the Quail
on Sunday and to avoid an overlap the early cars had to race the
day before. After a warm up on a very foggy race track in the
morning the race itself was again in perfect sunshine.
The second class that was already run on Saturday was the Eifel
Trophy for the early 911, 904 and 914 and a few Elva-Porsches.
Although the chassis of the 911 was always state of the art the
cars lift their inner front wheels in every fast corner especially in
the last turn so this was one of the most spectacular races to
watch. Although never accepted as a proper Porsche by some
people the race ready 914 proved very competitive and were front
runners both in practice and race fighting with the very fast 1964
Platypus-Porsche, a light fibreglass bodied Porsche-special.
Group number 3 was called the Weissach Trophy named after the
research and development center in Weissach. This class
featured the era when Porsche went out to win major sports car
titles rather than class victories with the smaller race cars
previously built. After the experience with the light fibreglass body
of the 904 the Porsche took the next step in 1966 with the 906.
Still dominant in the 2 litre class the 906 just had to give way to
the much more powerful GT40 and Ferrari 330P back then with
some very good overall results. No less than 4 of these took part
in the race along with 3 of the even rarer 910 (out of 15 build). The
910 was the successor of the 906 and a real race car as it lost
the street homologation that was still possible with the 906.
With the change of the regulations for 1968 Porsche came up
with an all new 3-litre 8-cylinder engine that directly competed
with the other major players for the overall win at the long
distance races. The 908 was available in different body forms both
as coupé and spyder, the best known are certainly the 908/3
spyders of Targa Florio fame both in Gulf and Martini livery also
seen on the later 917. Porsche works driver and co-initiator of the
first Rennsport Reunion Brian Redman drove one of these short
spyders, but highlight of the whole Rennsport Reunion was a
quartet of Porsche 917 entered. The 917 was infamous as a
powerful beast and brought Porsche the long expected Le Mans
win in 1970 in the hands of Hans Herrmann (in the Porsche
Salzburg colours). Two of them raced in the famous Gulf-livery, a
third one was present in the paddocks. The other two cars
featured Martini and Sandeman colours but star of the paddocks
was the very original 917-019 that took part in the concours.
The Carrera Trophy was open for the later and more powerful 911
with capacity over 2.5 litre and the Turbo variants 934 and 935
plus some race variants of the 924. During this time the race 911
passed though several changes both in engine and
aerodynamics. When comparing the later 935 K3 with the famous
2.7 RS that was built 10 years earlier one can see that (although
still showing much of the original lines) the shape is more
awkward and with the loss of the typical 911 front wings much
more advanced. With more small sponsors in these series the
field was a colourful mix of liveries.
The Stuttgart Cup was dedicated to the prototypes following the
917. The era of the 956 and 962 was the most successful for
Porsche with several wins at Le Mans. With the new model also a
new livery is linked to Porsche: Rothmans, the livery of the works
entered 956 and 962. After the dominant years a few more
Porsche engined private entered cars were successful but it took
until 1998 for Porsche to win Le Mans with a works entered car
again, the Porsche 911 GT1/98. Three of these GT1 were seen
around in the paddocks but unfortunately none of them raced
during the weekend. 2 of the new Porsche RS Spyder took part,
developed for the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series
the RS Spyder had its debut at Laguna Seca in 2006 just to gain
driver and construction title in the first year.
After the 5 “historic races” that were all sprint races with just 20
minutes to go there were 3 more classes for the newer cars.
Class 6 was dedicated to the Cayman Interseries of the small
Porsche coupés. The cars of this series featured all the famous
liveries from the earlier history including Gulf, Martini, Shell,
Canon and Martini plus a hippie car and even pink pig. Another
class was for the Porsche Club of America (PCA) Club racers and
showed a colourful mix over the model years. The last race class
was the “Rennsport Reunion Cup” for the latest 911 Cup cars.
This was a major part of the weekend with 45 minute races both
on Saturday and Sunday to promote the new 911.
But not all Porsche owners were eager to race their car so many
more race cars of importance could be seen in the Paddocks. On
Saturday afternoon these cars lined up in the paddocks to give
the drivers some demo laps to explore the famous corkscrew.
Many cars were driven by some of the former works drivers
including Derek Bell who demonstrated the Gulf-917 chassis 15.
The cars were then lined up in the pitlane for a concours, as soon
as the last engine was quiet the crowd took over the pitlane being
close to all the cars and the drivers. Beside the concours the
spectators also had the opportunity to go to several autograph
sessions in the Porsche pavilion were about 50 drivers sat during
the weekend.
Unfortunately the main race day on Sunday collided with the
Concours down at the Quail, the Race Car Classic so one had
the agony of choice where to go. For all those more interested in
the races the Sunday was once more a sunny day to give the
event the matching ambience. With just a foggy morning on
Saturday the weather was as good as it could be on a perfect
weekend on the Monterey Peninsula. With superb cars, a great
race track and a good supporting program this largest Porsche
car meeting ever on the west coast was a full success and one
could be curious where the Reunion V will take place in a few
year.
