Sebring, August 4, 2002
History was again made at the Sebring International Raceway on August 2 - 4, 2002. The
Ferrari Owners Club Florida Region held its summer track event and it was a success.
We had over 45 cars show up each day for this wonderful event, which culminated with a
concours on the runway at the airport where beautiful Cavallinos mingled with the
airplanes. All the drivers enjoyed the race track, as it offered them a chance to drive their
cars on the various surfaces that it offers and to feel the history that abounds at this race
track.
Some of the members stayed at the Chateau Élan hotel trackside making it an easy drive
to the track and allowing more time to drive the cars. It also offered a magnificent view
from the balconies overlooking the track. Many of the members enjoyed themselves until
late into the night at the hotel bar trading stories, and laughter could be heard from many
of the tables as everyone was having a great time at this well-planned event.
This event was a first of its kind as it also included members of the Porsche and Corvette
Clubs, along with some Lamborghini's, Mustangs, Shelby Cobras, Nascar cars, and
even a couple of VW Bugs and a BMW! We had every type of Ferrari represented and they
all performed with the power and excellence we've come to expect. The camaraderie
amongst all the drivers was excellent and the variety of cars brought out the best in all of
them with some friendly competition. The weather could not have been better as we
basked in clear skies and plenty of sunshine. The event was a big success and everyone
is looking forward to the next one at Homestead.
Friday night we enjoyed a private party at the Bueno Apetito Restaurant where not one
single chair was empty. The food and wine was
excellent, but the company was even better. Our members are not only top-notch drivers,
but also enjoy a good social event where everyone has a good time.
The dinner Saturday night, held at the Inn on the Lakes, included Mr. Kirk F. White, as
guest speaker who thoroughly captivated everyone with his stories and his knowledge of
racing Ferraris. The evening was so enjoyable that everyone stayed past the end time,
chatting and having a great time.
The perfect weekend ended with a very successful concours under the supervision of
Paul Bianco. Over 25 cars entered the concours and looked magnificent amongst the
airplanes. Trophies where handed out after a delicious breakfast brunch.
This club certainly knows how to put together an event. Full credit for this needs to be
given to our sponsors Smart Warranty, Merill Lynch and Tropical Sportscar Center the
many volunteers, and to our Regional Director David Bobe and his family. The Bobé's are
true Tifosi who love and enjoy their Ferraris as much as they enjoy being amongst other
Ferraristas.
Onward to Homestead!!!!!
