Cernobbio, Italy, 25 – 26 April 2009

During this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d´Este, an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta (s/n 412035) of U.S. collector Jon Shirley gathered all three major awards!

On Saturday, a beautiful spring day in the gardens of Hotel Villa d´Este, the car earned the “Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este”. This prize is awarded by referendum of owners and invited guests of the concours. In addition, the car also made winner in its “Pre-War Closed Cars” class.

Cold temperatures, fog and torrential rains on Sunday could not keep 2,600 visitors from streaming to nearby Villa Erba, where the Concorso was open to the general public. They awarded the same Alfa the “Trofeo BMW Group Italia” by referendum.
To make the triumph complete, the car once again claimed victory during Sunday night’s gala dinner, when the jury named it best in show, earning it the coveted “Trofeo BMW Group” award.
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este again has been a huge success, showing 50 high-quality cars, covering coach building tradition from 1925 to the early 70’s. This success has been imposingly brought out by the crowd of local and international visitors that braved Sunday’s bad weather.

In addition to classic cars, there was a separate class for modern prototypes and concept cars that carry on the tradition to the present. The Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for the best modern prototype was given to the striking Aston Martin One-77 Coupé.

This year has also been a year of anniversaries. It was 80 years ago that the first concours was held on the grounds of Villa d’Este. After trying to revive it as a classic car show in the mid 90’s, it ultimately was the introduction of BMW-Group as a sponsor and co-organizer in 1999 that prevented the event from folding and propelled it to its current significance.
Due to its combination of style, the wonderful venue at the shores of Lake Como and a fantastic selection of breathtaking cars, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este might arguably be the best concourse event of Europe.
