Bern, 17 – 23 August, 2009
The historic GP of Bern was a major race between 1931 and
1954. After the crash in Le Mans 1955 and the ban of racing in
Switzerland Bern lost one of its international attractions. As the
name Bremgarten is ever since linked with the great battles of the
Silver Arrows and names like Caracciola (who had his last race in
Bern 1952), Ascari and Fangio, it is no surprise that there was
always a revival intended.
After two attempts on the original course in 1998 and 2001 this
year saw a new attempt on a new course with a new organisation.
The GP Suisse 2009 was held between the 17th and the 23rd of
August. During this week the event started with an retrospective
of cars brought together by the Oldtimer Club Bern and a
commemorative exhibition for Clay Regazzoni including a Ferrari
312 B raced by himself in the seventies.
The main event started with a corso through Bern on Friday and
Saturday evening where the cars were displayed at the
Bundesplatz. This was a great advertisement for the event and
many visitors were back on Sunday for the demo-runs on the
streets around Frauenkappelen.
More than 300 cars and about 50 bikes were entered in 8
classes. Highlights were the Auto Union D-Type from the Audi
Museum (the originally entered C-Type had gear box problems
and was replaced by the D-Type) and the Mercedes-Benz W154
from the Mercedes-Collection to revive the impressions of the
original race in the thirties. Furthermore an Alfa Romeo 159
Alfetta and several Jaguars from the Heritage Trust including C-
Type, D-Type and a XJR9 Le Mans racer were entered. Plus
many private entered cars as several Maseratis and Bugattis.
A special class was reserved for Swiss build race-cars like
Monteverdi, Sauber and Enzman just to name a few. Most of the
visitors did not even know that there were so many cars built in
their own country.
Another class was for Replicas, Specials and Recreations. This
gave owners of the Jaguar C-Type and D-Type replicas the
opportunity to take part in such an event that is normally reserved
for the “real ones”. This is also a class for all those popular pre-
war specials mostly based on a British chassis (Riley, Alvis...),
most of them being Saloons in a previous live.
All the cars had two outings on Sunday morning and in the
afternoon, attracting more than 30,000 visitors in superb weather.
This shows the organizer that there is a demand for further events
and so it is no surprise that the next GP Suisse is planned for
2011. The manufacturer have seen the potential of the event in
advance as it is unusual that already four gave support by sending
their cars to the first edition.
On the downside is the lack of tradition for those events in
Switzerland. The organisers scrupulously avoided taking any risk
as an incident might be the end of all efforts before they have even
established the event. So all the cars were guided by pace-cars
at a rather leisurely speed around the track for two or three laps,
what was not what everyone expected when entering a car to a
“GP”.
Maybe next time the organiser can find a compromise between
action and safety, the experiences made this time will be very
helpful.
We are looking forward to the next edition, maybe there will be a
little more international participants giving the event a more
international flair.
