Monterey, Friday 13th of August 2010
Friday the 13th was one of these days during the Monterey week
that was packed with events. After a visit at the Concorso Italiano
in the morning we headed for the Quail just after Lunch. When
parking the car outside the resort it already became clear that
this event has a totally different approach to the theme than the
Concorso in the morning.
The Concorso is very much a relaxed meeting for the owners of
Italian cars to show off their possession making the visitors to
some sort of car spotter. The parking area at the Quail showed
already many cars of the kind that were on display at the
Concorso making someone curious what to expect on the inside.
At the Quail the cars also play the major role but they are more a
part of the whole experience. Some of the finest machinery are
parked in groups in the middle of the park of the Quail Lodge,
surrounded by tents containing the best food and luxury
accessories from the sponsors. The Quail presents the cars more
as a part of the luxurious life than many other events and so this
event is also attractive for those who are generally interested in
other fine things than just in cars. One could see elegant women
wandering through the cars with a glass of champagne in their
hand or just enjoying the sun in a beach chair, a sight that is
rather rare on pure car events. At several buffets gastronomic
specialities of different countries invited for a rest in the shadow
and to enjoy good food, new watches by Rolex or selected
automobilia were presented.
The car manufacturers have recognized the potential of the
visitors as future buyers of their latest supercars and so it was no
surprise that Bugatti, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz have chosen
this location to present their new toys.
Bugatti launched the new Super Sport. The new top model in bare
carbon tinted in blue drew much attention and a first try in the
driver's seat surely generated serious interest with some of the
attendants. On the classic side The Quail got a visit from the
Bugatti race class from the Rolex Monterey Reunion at Laguna
Seca and some of the Bugattis that were already present for the
American Bugatti Rally to start the next week. But they were all
outshone by a stunning trio of Type 57 Cabriolets in two-tone
paintwork including Peter Mullins Aravis. The Quail was also
chosen to present the new book about his stunning new museum
for his collection of French cars in Oxnard.
Mercedes-Benz once more showed the new SLS AMG, this time
as a polished race version, flanked by a 1952 300 SL Prototype.
Further SLS were parked outside for a test dive.
Ferrari was prominently displayed at the centre of the area with a
458 Italia, the California and an all new 599 GTO. The stage was
surrounded by a great selection of classic Ferraris spanning the
time from an early 195 Inter, beautifully restored with its original
golden Touring Berlinetta body, up to the 365 series. Several
other examples have to be also mentioned: two 400
Superamerica, the very interesting Coupé Speciale once owned
by Gianni Agnelli with its stainless steel panels and the highly
prized Pinin Farina Cabriolet of New York Collector Peter Kalikow.
Another highlight was a large display of the work of Carroll
Shelby. Beside a celebration of 45 years of the Shelby Mustang
with virtually all derivatives on show some early Cobras were there
as well. Carroll Shelby himself took the prize for his original 1962
Cobra in totally unrestored condition, handed over by the host Sir
Michael Kadoorie.
Further awards were handed over to the beautiful Maserati A6
G/2000 Frua Spider (s/n 2017), a Jaguar C-Type in Carrera
Panamericana livery, a Ferrari 275 GTC Clienti Competizione
(s/n08457) and an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Zagato.
Best of Show went to the 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition
Disappearing Top Convertible owned by Ken and Ann Smith.
Unfortunately after the prize giving ceremony parts of the back
panel came loose and fell on the Delahaye causing minor
damages on the bonnet.
Just after the concours we headed over the street to pay a visit to
Bonhams Auction. After a successful first day with a record sale
of the Porsche 917 Interstate we just missed the sale of the 1930
Mercedes-Benz 38/250 7.1 Liter Supercharged 'SS' by seconds,
another successful sale at 2.5 Mio $. Compared to the other
auctions in Monterey Bonhams lacked on space so the cars had
to be parked very close together after their sale. Nevertheless
there were some superb cars fetching high prises on both days.
The Quail was one of the most exquisite events of the Monterey
week with superb cars in a very stylish surrounding. Although
entrance fees are rather high it is to be expected that next year's
event will be once again sold out fast. So if you want to
experience this event next year you should be looking for your
tickets well in advance.
