Palm Beach, 23rd of January 2011
This years Cavallino Classics in its 20th anniversary found their
last act in the Classic Sports Sunday at the Mar-a-Lago Club.
Mar-a-Lago was build between 1924 and 1927 for Mrs.Marjorie
Merriweather Post as a private house that was acquired in 1987
be real estate tycoon Donald Trump who had the buildings
completely restored to use them as a private club for the wealthy
since. The large parkway behind the main house build in Hispano-
Moresque style is the perfect location for the final concours of the
weekend. Whereas the one yesterday was purely reserved for
Ferraris this one features several marques and a few inter-marque
classes with Jaguars, Aston Martin, Mercedes and others
displayed.
Feature this year was the reunion of the very rare Cunninghams to
celebrate their 50th anniversary. 36 of these cars were build
between 1951 and 1955 in West Palm Beach and no less than 12
were displayed today. Further cars of Briggs Cunningham
including his first race car, a 1939 Special called Bu-Merc and
one of the 1950 Le Mans entered Cadillac driven by Miles and
Sam Collier.
At the Aston Martin Class 2 rare DB4 Gts and a DB5 Volante
were shown but the class win went to an beautifully restored DB
MKIII DHC.
The “German car class” was mainly dominated by 4 entered 300
SL either in Roadster and Gullwing form but class winner was a
small Porsche 356 Convertible in desirable Carrera-form.
The Ferraris were mainly the same seen the day before and once
again the 212 Export Vignale Coupé was awarded best in the
competition class. Further entries included the 375 MM
Berlinetta, two 375 Americas and a 250 GT SWB California.
Highlight of the Classic Sports Sunday are usually the prewar
cars parked near the pool. Beside a rare Aston Martin 15/98 still
wearing its original Abbot-Body a Bugatti T57 Stelvio an two large
Lincoln and Packard were displayed. Compared to them the black
Squire with Corsica body looked rather tiny but far more elegant.
To round up things a Chrysler Imperial appeared that was once
owned by Mrs. Merriweather Post and so the car found back
home at least for one day.
