Nuerburgring, 29 – 30 June 2011
The biennial Modena Motorsport Track Days were held on the full
Grand Prix circuit at the Nurburgring on Wednesday and
Thursday, 29th & 30th June. The event always attracts a splendid
array of Ferrari road and competition cars, including around a
dozen F1 cars, together with a wide variety of other marques. This
year these included a trio of fifties Maserati sports racing cars, a
250 F and a pair of MC12s, an Audi R8 LMS, a McLaren F1 GTR,
Porsches including a GT1, 908 and 962, a Dodge Viper GTR and
a Ford GT40. The weather in the Nurburgring area can be very
changeable, and it certainly was, as after a bright sunny start to
the first day, black clouds rolled in around lunchtime, depositing
heavy rain, which lasted well into the afternoon, leaving a thick
mist for the remainder of the day. This curtailed most of the on
track activity, apart from a few hardy souls who ventured out later
in the afternoon in the miserable conditions. Fortunately the
weather on the second day was much more clement, with mainly
bright sunshine and light cloud, allowing everybody to make up for
the track time lost on the Wednesday.
The event provides participants with plenty of track time, with
sessions arranged in groups of cars of similar types, i.e. F1 cars,
sports racing and GT competition cars, and road cars. As a
bonus to the Ferrari participants, all Ferraris in attendance are
automatically included in an informal Concorso d’Eleganza, with a
number of classes spanning the range of cars in attendance, the
winners receiving elegantly crafted leather plaques by Schedoni,
and a certificate signed by the judging team. The prizes were
presented by the renowned ex-Ferrari and Porsche works driver,
and six times Le Mans winner, Jacky Ickx.
Although early production Ferraris were relatively thin on the
ground, possibly due to the inclement weather forecast, overall
there was still a fine and varied selection of models to be enjoyed,
and to hear the high pitched scream of multiple V10 and V12
Ferrari F1 engines was worth the trip alone! Amongst the stars
were the 250 GT SWB California Spider, chassis # 2015 GT,
which ran in the 1960 24 Heures du Mans and the 12 Hours of
Sebring in 1961. The 2009 edition featured the 1968 312 F1 car,
chassis # 0007, and this year there was another example,
chassis # 0003 in attendance, which took the Monoposto award.
There was also a quartet of 250 GT SWB berlinettas, a 196 Dino
sports racing car, a pair of 313 P(B) Spiders, a 512 M, a 512
BB/LM, the Enzo prototype, chassis # 90865, a pair of FXXs and
a 599XX, to name but a few. At the end of the day, the Best of
Show award went to the 126 C2 of Michael Willms, chassis # 061,
newly built to give it the appearance of a different car raced by Gilles
Villeneuve, this being the only remaining example of this model
still in existence, which also saw plenty of track action over the
two days.
