Paris, 16th of April – Nice, 21st of April

Ten days ago this year's Tour Auto arrived at the final stop in Nice at the Cote d´Azur in south France. After five days with over 2000 km on the road, numerous special stages and no less than five different race tracks visited the 220 crews arrived at home with a lot of impressions, the winners with their trophies and the further placed with the best purposes for the next year.

During our hounding through France we tried to keep you up to date with small daily reports showing the impressions along the road and the action on the track.

Now with a few days passed it is time to have a closer look at the participating cars of this year's edition. Being in its 20th year since the first Tour (when it was still called Tour de France Auto) in 1992 there are few events showing the development in the classic car scene as clearly as the Tour Auto and it is interesting to compare the entry list of previous years with the latest.

One of the first reports on the Tour Auto on Barchetta dates back to 1998 (see here <http://www.barchetta.cc/All.Ferraris/events-stories/events/1992-2002/1998/tour-auto/tour-auto-story/index.html>) and it features an impressive line-up of Ferrari including several 250 GT SWB and 250 GTO. As Ferrari was always on top of the market this is a good indicator of the development of the last 15 years. Back in the mid 1990s the market was settled after the boom and crash of the late 1980s and most of the cars were in good hands of enthusiasts enjoying them as they lost their nimbus of a safe investment. This might have been the golden age of the classic car rallies like the Tour Auto and the Mille Miglia with impressive entry lists of the best cars around. Over the last 15 years the prices were going up steadily and with this increase of the value the entries of “blue chip” cars are drying out, a phenomenon that can be seen on every driving event. Some of the cars became collector's items that are rarely seen outside the proud owners garage or the lawn of the major concours, some are even with investors who are not interested in using them. But even the long time owners of these cars are becoming afraid of using them due to their high value as some of the “old names” could be still found on the entry lists but with reasonable priced cars like Jaguar XK, E-types, Porsche 356 or early 911 giving the same driving fun without the pressure of the immense value.

So it was a very ambitious intention to make the Ferrari 250 GTO the featured car of this year's edition. In its golden jubilee the icon from Maranello is featured in almost every major event this year starting with last year's line-up at the Pebble Beach Concours, the Cavallino Classic or the Amelia Island Concours, but these were all show event rather than hard driving events like the Tour Auto so it was not a surprise that this year entry list was far away from the 5 cars entered at the same event 14 years ago. In earlier entry lists three cars were announced and an additional duo for display at the Grand Palais for the scrutineering but at the end just two cars were entered and the third was withdrawn but shown in Paris. The remaining two cars were seen in previous years with Brandon Wang´s blue example (4219GT) usually leaving just after the start for a tour on its own and not to be seen again before the finish so the only GTO doing the whole Tour was ex Ecurie Francorchamps car (4153GT). Therefore it is more than noteworthy that the all-female crew entered the car in the competition class rather than the regularity for the first time, so the car could be enjoyed by the numerous spectators on the race tracks at full rather than in comfortable cruising speed. The car came home in a respectable 20th position after a faultless drive and without any wounds contrary to some opponents.

But not just the small amount of GTOs make the difference to the earlier events but more so the absence of the many 250 derivatives, so not even one of the name giving 250 GT LWB “TdF” could be seen at this year's edition. Just 4 Ferrari 250 were entered, the recently repainted Boano (0533GT) with original MM history, a 250 GT Lusso and a sole 250 GT SWB (3143GT). Two years ago the SWB was the featured car of the Tour Auto 2010 with no less than 14 examples of the GTO predecessor on the list so the only entered example might be another indicator for the mentioned development.

Star of this year edition was without doubt the 250 LM (6105) that was entered by its new owner for the first time in the Tour Auto. After having completed the TA in recent years on different cars the 250 LM was a new challenge especially for the co-driver with very limited foot well showing that this is not a touring car intended for a passenger transport but a track racer with a additional passenger seat. But beside the limited room and smaller problems (especially with the traffic before the start of the various hill climb special stages) the car made it to the finish much to the enjoyment of the spectators due to its great sound and look showing that it is still possible to enter one of these high priced cars.

The only model that is still very prominent on the entry list is the 275 GTB with a strong line-up at the Grand Palais including some competition versions. Someone called the 275 GTB a little bit disrespectful “the Opel Astra of the Tour Auto” a few years ago and when looking at the line-up one could forget that the GTB is back in the million dollar range as well and so one must hope that the owners keep them in the next editions.

But certainly the Tour Auto is not just about Ferrari and when looking in the winners list of the previous years there is another car that celebrates its golden jubilee as well being a rival of the Ferrari GTO, the AC Cobra. Five examples fought in the second competition class with two very fast Ford GT40s for the first places and three of them finished in the top 5 showing their pace and reliability making them front runners in many races including the Goodwood TT. After Ludovic Caron winning the last year's edition on an AC Cobra this year's winner was Shaun Lynn and co-diver Kevin Kivlochan with a trouble free lead from day one. Other cars in this race group included a couple of hot Jaguar E-Types and the small but very fast Lotus Elan.

The first competition class was dominated again by the Alfa Romeo GTAs, especially the black/green example of von Wildberg/Hahne who were running in front on all track races. This class was the most exciting for the spectators as the earlier chassis show the work of the car better than the later ones with several wheels in the air in the chicanes. The front running armada of the Alfa Romeo GTAs could be seen dancing on the small circuits such as Bresse giving spectacular images of two-wheel drive. Other cars in this class included a fast bright orange Jaguar MKII, a duo of beautiful Alfa TZ, the already mention Ferrari GTO and a duo of early Aston Martin (DB2 and DB2/4). Furthermore this was the class of the Porsche 356s including the overall index of performance winner Yves Junne and British Porsche specialist Lee Maxted-Page who defended their last year's title. Another car to be mentioned was the Porsche 904 GTS that looked very low in the field of touring cars.

The last competition class features the race cars from the early 1970s and the prototypes from the late 1960s, this is the fastest of the 3 competition classes. This group includes a trio of Porsche 906 and 910 that are regular entrants and front runners together with the Ligier of Paul Knapfield that failed to finish this year after his win in this category last year. So the Porsche 906 of Mr.John of B. fought all the five days with the very fast Alpine A110 1800 Gr.4 both of Jean Ragnotti and Alain Serpaggi for the first places with the earlier winning the category G and the two Alpines winning the category H. This was also the class of several Porsche RSR and the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competition (14429), a trio of De Tomaso Pantera and some exotics like a Datsun 240Z, a Chevrolet Camaro and a Citroen SM.

BMW was one of the sponsors this year with a display of the Art Cars in the Grand Palais and several cars in the different classes. Two of the beautiful 3.0 CSL batmobiles in the class 3 and another one in the regularity plus two 2002 Turbo, a 2002 TI and 3.0 CSI represented the bavarian marque.

Last but not least two Ferrari 308 GTB Gr.4 Michelotto had a class on their own (Class I).

Beside the competition classes that make the Tour Auto so special there is also a regularity class for all those who do not want to race their car for some reasons. Sharing the same road, special stages and race tracks the regularity class can choose from three different allotted times for their way though France. The regularity class is a conglomeration of different cars ranging from exotics like the Porsche 550 Spyder or the 718 RSK, the numerous Ferrari 275 GTB and an Aston Martin DB4 GT to a less sportive Mercedes-Benz 190 SL. Fortunately the field is mixed instead of sorted by car so the parade of the cars is more varied for the spectators. Many of them could be seen in the smaller villages standing at the road with entry lists printed from the official website to watch the cars they know from their youth and getting informed about cars they have never seen before.

As the Tour takes a different route every year his might have been the first time for some f them that they saw them passing by.

Now that the Tour is over we are looking forward for next year's edition and we are curious to see where the journey will lead us both on the road and also in the future entry lists. Let's hope that some owners of the more exotic cars will bring them out again as there are few possibilities to enjoy a car more than during 5 days in France on small country roads, closed off special stages and race tracks. And when entering in the regularity class one does not have to worry too much about the valuable material if the car is well prepared and properly looked after by a mechanic during the Tour.
