Modena, 25-26 May 2013
The inaugural Motor Gallery exhibition was held at the Modena
Fiera over the weekend of 25-26 May 2013, attracting a wide
variety of Italian cars and motorcycles, with a number of rarities,
to the three halls, spanning 28,000 square metres, of the
exhibition complex occupied by the show. In the “Terra di Motori”
(Land of Motors), as the area is known, it was fitting that the
exhibition concentrated solely on Italian made vehicles, and
featured examples from well known local collections like Pannini,
Righini and Stanguellini. There were also displays from the
renowned local specialist car manufacturers, Ferrari, via their
Museo Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati, and also specialist car
dealers.

Two of the halls were devoted primarily to themed displays and
classic dealer sales areas, these being linked by a small hall
featuring the Museo Ferrari display. This featured “ancient and
modern”, a 250 GT PF Coupe and a 599 SA Aperta, flanking a F1
simulator with large screen, which seemed one of the most
popular attractions of the show, as there was always a large
crowd surrounding it, whilst across the aisle was the ex-Gianni
Agnelli Testarossa Spider. Unsurprisingly, being in Modena, there
were quite a number of Ferraris spread around the exhibition
halls, plus a couple of examples of the Ferrari engine Lancia
Thema 8.32. There were also some niche market manufacturers,
featuring both modern day supercars like the Mazzanti Evantra,
retro style cars in the form of the Marciano 268A, which has
shades of Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale and Bizzarrinni in its
aluminium bodywork, and the beautifully executed Lancia 037
replica, based on a Lancia Beta Monte Carlo frame, by Boldrin
Auto. There was also a stand promoting the new Autodromo di
Modena, which is situated just off the Via Emilia, past the
Modena Nord Autostrada exit in the direction of Reggio Emilia. In
essence the circuit is the renaissance of the old Modena
Aeroautodromo that was in the city centre, and is 2.007kms in
length, built to modern safety standards, offering a variety of
facilities, with more to come, including a hotel and shopping mall.
The third hall was devoted to a “Mostra Scambio”, or what is
generally known in English as an autojumble, although this term
demeans the quality of the offerings, as there were a wide variety
of rare parts, books, sales literature, limited edition scale models,
and numerous other automobile related items on offer, together
with a selection of cars and motorcycles. There was also an
outside sales area, featuring parts for cars, motorcycles, bicycles
and more cars and motorcycles for sale, including a bizarre
interpretation of a Ferrari 512 M sports racing car, based on Fiat
running gear, although the wheels did look nice!
There were two main themed displays, one for barchettas and
spiders, with a fine variety of cars on display, ranging from little
known marques like a Sighinolfi 750 Gilco-Nardi (small car, big
name), and a Giaur 750 Giannini, through better known marques
like to Stanguellini, to Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Ferrari, the latter
being the largest in numbers. The other main feature display was
for rally cars, with a wonderful colourful selection of liveries,
including the famous Martini liveries worn by Lancias like the
Integrale, S4 and 037 models, plus the almost equally attractive
Alitalia livery which graced the Fiat Ritmo, Lancia Beta and of
course the legendary Stratos. Then there were rally cars from
pre-mobile advertising hoardings, like the Lancia Flavia and Fulvia,
although the latter did become one during its career on the world
rally stage.
Across the aisle from the rally cars was a recreation of the pits at
the old Modena Aeroautodromo, with a nice display featuring a
Stanguellini Formula Junior monoposto, a Maserati 6C 34
monoposto, a Ferrari 250 GT TdF berlinetta and an Alfa Romeo
TZ, courtesy of the Circolo della Biella group in Modena. There
were also plenty of other interesting cars spread around the halls,
including some nice pre-war Alfa Romeos and Lancias, a
selection of “barn find” US Specification Maseratis from the
seventies, a one-off Alfa Romeo 1900 convertible bodied by
Ghia-Aigle, and the unique Ferrari Testarossa based Colani Testa
d’Oro, with twin turbochargers on the flat twelve engine, which
broke the land speed record for its class in 1991 with a speed of
351kph, and it was running clean with catalytic converters! It
wasn’t only high end collectors cars on display, as there was
everything from Vespa motor scooters, through Fiat 500s and
600s, to a couple of small commercial vehicles, and some
examples in definite need of some TLC, like an Alfa Romeo
station wagon with body by Riva.
For an inaugural event it was certainly impressive, with a great
selection of vehicles spanning the years, so there was something
to suit virtually every taste, whether it be on two or four wheels,
old or new. It certainly deserves to succeed, and from this show
the organisers certainly have a strong foundation to build upon.
