London, 08 September, 2014
The now traditional RM Auction at the Evolution exhibition centre
in Battersea Park, London, was held on Monday 08 September
following the Hampton Court Palace Concours of Elegance, which
was held over the preceding weekend, and where some of the
“star cars” were displayed as tasters for the sale. The auction
featured a total of 81 vehicles on offer, the most unusual being
presented as the first lot ,101, this was a CIAM-NASA
Hypersonic Flying Laboratory named “Kholod”. The lot was
presented as a static aerospace artefact, but in its day, 1991 to
be precise, it was the fastest machine ever to run within the
earth’s atmosphere, when it achieved Mach 6.47, a speed record
that it held for a decade. It sold for £38,025, although you can’t
drive it or ride in it, it is a piece of aerospace history, and what a
conversation piece it would make in a rather large garage!

The more conventional vehicles were wide ranging, both in age
and price, the oldest example on offer being a 1909 Hotchkiss
Type T Coupe de Ville, which was in largely original condition,
and which sold for £39,200. This was closely followed by a 1914
Minerva Type KK Tourer, which from the catalogue description
was an older restoration, and certainly needed some elbow
grease to polish up the brassware, and this sold for £50,400. At
the other end of the age spectrum, and also in the higher
echelons of the price league, was a 2003 Ferrari Enzo, which sold
for £952,000, whilst a 1989 Ferrari F40 made £761,600. In fact it
was a good sale for Ferrari models, as there were 23 examples
on offer, and every single one sold, with some making strong
money for the model, notably a 348 tb sold for £75,600, and a 328
GTS from the same family ownership sold for a staggering
£156,800, both well above estimate, but both were pristine
examples of the respective models, showing only 600kms and
200kms on the odometer respectively.
The top sale of the day also went to a Ferrari, a 1956 250 GT
“TdF2 Berlinetta, chassis # 0563GT, resplendent in pale blue with
French Tricolour Stripes, which sold for £4.872 million, whilst next
up was another Ferrari, a 275 GTB with alloy body, which made
£1.96 million, with the final top three spot being taken by a 1964
Shelby 289 Competition Cobra at £1.176 million. Of the 81 lots on
offer, only 11 failed to sell, giving an impressive sell through rate
of 86.4%, with the total sales figure being £21,811,945.
