Revival Meeting in Goodwood making this the most successful
event of its kind worldwide.

But with all these events during the year what is it that attracts
the crowd especially to this venue and for those never visited
Goodwood it might be a mystery but all those who have will
certainly agree: because it is the best way one can spent a
weekend with classic cars and vintage atmosphere. Some have
tried to copy the concept in smaller form but it will be never
achieved outside the tradition-conscious United Kingdom. Where
else in the world can you convince this amount of people not only
to dress up in period style but to take serious efforts to make it
look good. One could walk the whole day around the track without
watching a single race and still be entertained by people and
attractions in the infield as the Goodwood team managed to give
the visitors a suitable playground. On one side a period street
display with matching Tesco Supermarket and other shop invites
to wander around, on the other side small groups of actors like
the glam girls, school hussies or cleaning women entertain the
visitors. Annually changing displays like this year’s Brighton Peer
spring a surprise for return visitors and for all those who could not
get enough ambience the fair on the “other side of the road”
outside the race ground gives entertainment late into the evening
when the race track is long closed.
And although Goodwood is famous for its ambience it is still also
great racing on a fast and very charming track far off the modern
boring high-tech FIA fenced F1 tracks known from many other
race events. Nowhere else can one sit as close to the action so
the experienced Revival visitors take the best places at Madgwick
or Woodcote setting up their picnic towels and camp-chairs early
in the morning. Over three days starting with the practice
sessions on Friday no less than 16 races in different classes
bring back the best of racing of the heydays from 1948 to 1966
ranging from pre-war single seaters to the GT racers of the RAC
TT.
Highlights include the Sussex Trophy with sports cars from the
late 1950s that started this year’s race schedule on Friday
evening with the race into the dark. Started a few year ago the
first evening race takes away some of time pressure from the
following day and gives a great atmosphere while the sports car
are racing into sunset. Unlike in previous year it were not the
Aston Martin DB3S, Maserati A6GCS and Jaguar C-Type of the
Freddie March Memorial Trophy but the Aston Martin DBR1,
Maserati 300S, Birdcage and Listers opening this year’s races.
After the practice session in the morning the Ferrari 246S Dino of
Levant’s/Verdon-Roe started the one-hour race from pole in front
of a couple of Listers. After the obligatory drivers change when the
Ferrari came in first of the top cars to change from the owner to
the seasoned historic racer Verdon-Roe the Ferrari fought back
his way to the podium to finish second behind the Lister-Jaguar
Knobbly of Keen/Minshaw who led from the start to finish except
for a few laps during the drivers change window.
Usually the Sussex Trophy also features several Jaguar D-Types
every year but for the 60th anniversary of the Coventry racer the
Goodwood team had something special in mind. Besides the
usual races the special parades are always a great attraction
including the Silver Arrows or Ferrari GTOs in previous years but
like last year with the 50th anniversary of the Ford GT40 the race
schedule even featured a single car D-Type race, the Lavant Cup.
60 years ago Jaguar introduced the very advanced design of the
aluminium monocoque sports car with the disc breaks that should
win Le Mans for 3 years. In its debut appearance at La Sarthe the
short nose trio included top driver Stirling Moss who did not finish
because of the new disc brakes leaving Duncan Hamilton and
Tony Rolt top finisher after 24 hours just a lap short of the winning
Ferrari 375 Plus. Beside the prototype (XKC401) two of the three
1954 Le Mans entries (XKC402 and XKC403) where lined up in
the high speed demonstration parade but like several other
significant examples they were not entered in the actual race as
was the very last D-Type produced, the Ecurie Ecosse long nose
1957 LM winning chassis XKD606 brought to Goodwood from the
Louwman Museum. With about two dozen D-Type and five XKSS
this might have been the biggest gathering of this type in recent
years but certainly even the prestigious events like Goodwood
cannot overact the fact that most of these high valued cars are
not raced anymore in this crazy market and so at the end just
about half of them where lined up for the Lavant Cup including one
or the other replica. Still an impressive sight when a single
marque (or car) field is blasting down to Madgwick the race itself
did underperform a little as just a few cars where actually
wheel-to-wheel racing whereas most of them soon found their own
pace leaving few battles for positions but still a pure D-Type grid
will remain in memory for quite a while.
But not just the Jaguar was celebrating its 60th anniversary as
the Maserati 250F was introduced the same year. Giving the
legendary Juan Manuel Fangio his final F1 title the most
successful racer with the trident in its 100 year old history about
16 of this rare single seater were lined-up in Goodwood. Like the
Jaguar the Maserati had an own track demonstration parade and
even more significant an own paddock display, the replication of
the Autodromo di Monza paddocks. Among these cars were
several works team cars including chassis 2529 that is
considered the most important of all of them. In 1957 Fangio
drove this car to maybe his biggest success at the Nürburgring
when he set several lap records chasing the leading Ferrari of
Hawthorn and Collins to a victory at the green hell. Ten 250F were
also entered in the Richmond Trophy for 2.5 litre front engined
single seater before 1960 but apart from the Tec-Mec Maserati
250F none of them was really competing for the front positions as
they had to give way to the newer Lotus-Climax of Roger Wills,
the two Scarab-Offenhauser and even the ill-fated Aston Martin
DBR4 although they were successful in the hands of Roy
Salvadori and Sir Stirling Moss at the very same place in 1955/56.
Both Moss (who just turned 85 last week) and the late Salvadori
were featured drivers of the Revival Meeting in the past, an honour
that is given to one of the greats every year. This year’s honouree
was Sir Jackie Stewart, the triple F1 champion who actually
started racing single seaters at Goodwood. Being a skeet
shooting champion prior to his racing career Stewart started in his
first F3 race at Goodwood in 1964 in the Cooper-BMW T72 as
present in his special parade before racing in the BRM team for
three years in F1. After a victory in the first season just a few
more podium finishes led to a change to Matra in 1968 where he
became second in his first season followed by his first drivers’
championship. Two more should follow in the Tyrell team before
he quit from active racing but stayed in F1 as a TV presenter and
later with his son in the Stewart Racing Team. But not just his
success as a racer but also his achievements for the security in
modern racing will be his legacy. At the Quail in Monterey he
entertained the audience a few weeks ago with the memories of
his first big crash in Spa where not even a proper transport to the
hospital was available as the ambulance was lost on the bumpy
roads at the Ardennes. Thanks to his efforts a lot changed since
and not few drivers might be still alive because of his suggestions.
Finally the weekend came to its featured races on Sunday
afternoon with the most prominent Royal Automobile Club TT
Celebration race for the GT cars from 1960-1964. Apart from the
St. Mary’s Trophy for touring cars this is usually the race with the
most professional race drivers in the grid of the one-hour
two-driver race. A few changes have been made from last year as
this was the first time the RAC TT just had a practice in Saturday
instead of Friday and Saturday, again to safe time in a very tight
time schedule that leaves no room for delays. As several
practices on Friday were red flagged due to accidents this was a
good decision as the last race was running late anyway even
without the additional RAC practice. So during the sole practice
on Saturday the top six cars lapped the circuit with an average of
more than 100 mph with three AC Cobras in the top five lined-up
for the main race on Sunday. Most prominent of the entries
included five times Le Mans winners Emanuele Pirro, Derek Bell
and other heroes from the past and present like Jochen Mass,
Nicolas Minassian or Red Bull principal Christian Horner. The
cars were basically the same as in previous years as it is a very
small but selected club that takes the RAC TT every year as one
of the hardest races for the valuable GT cars of this era including
Ferrari 250 GTO and 250 GT SWB.
Unlike in the last two years the race was held in absolute dry
conditions after the heavy showers in the last editions. This
meant that the field was not completely mixed up due to the
conditions but allowed the front runners to stay in front up to the
finish. Just after the start it became a battle for the lead by the
two fastest Cobras of Bryant/Smith in the No.1 car and the No.2
car of David Hart and current Sauber F1 test driver Giedo van der
Garde in his Goodwood debute. After about ¾ of the race the
Bryant/Smith Cobra was losing ground because of a loss of power
leaving Hart/van der Garde a trouble free victory at the end
followed by the Maserati Tipo 151 of Colasaccho/Hill and the
Jaguar E-Type of Nicoll-Jones/Liddell. The sensational winners of
last year, the Aston Martin DP212 of Wolfgang Friedrich and
Simon Hadfield had nothing to do with the outcome of the race
this year as the Project Car lacked the pace of the top cars in the
dry.
So this was a wonderful weekend in Goodwood again and apart
from the races many attractions made this also a great event for
those not purely into racing. It is not a surprise that Goodwood
also attracts a lot of female visitors, much more than pure race
weekends. Not few took the long journey through the tunnel from
the continent in a classic as could be seen by the many foreign
registration numbers in the classic car park. The revival is also
very attractive to fans of historic aviation as several air shows
feature the war birds from WWII, this year especially the sole
remaining pair of flying Lancasters in existence, the second
bomber was even brought over from Canada to takes its turns over
the Goodwood estate during the WWII display representing time
of the war in West Sussex and the role of Goodwood as an air
field.
Certainly Goodwood has too many attractions to present them
here in detail but our gallery should give you a good impression of
what to expect from a visit. But this cannot replace an own visit
as it cannot transport the overwhelming impression when entering
the gates early in the morning to spent the day in a complete
different world that might be unique.
If you now plan a trip to Goodwood in the next year make sure
that you look for an accommodation way in advance as the region
is short of payable hotel rooms during the sold out Revival and
Festival of Speed.
