Carmel, 11 August 2015
Now in its eighth year, the Concours-on-the-Avenue, brings the
picturesque Ocean Avenue and surrounding streets in Carmel
alive with a free to all car show, which has grown not only in
numbers and stature, but also in quality, as it has evolved, and
has become one of the must-do gatherings of the week. The show
is really the opening shot for the numerous car shows in the
frenetic week of motoring activity on the Monterey Peninsula. It
takes place on the Tuesday, and fills Ocean Avenue with a wide
variety of vehicles to delight attendees, providing a rich vein of
both exciting and unusual offerings, that are an interesting part of
motoring and motor racing history.
The variety was immense with well over 200 vehicles on display in
26 classes along either side of the tree lined avenue and its cross
streets, home to a wide variety of quaint boutiques, niche market
shops and restaurants. They ranged from a Porsche Junior
tractor, through beach buggies, custom cars and hot rods, to a
colourful array of Shelby Mustangs, which drove down from the
Laguna Seca race track with a police escort. There was also a
wide selection of classic American cars, Porsches, including an
un-restored 356 pre-A series “Bent Window” Coupe, a Porsche
Speedster and a Carrera Abarth, classic and modern Ferrari
models, which included an example of the limited production 400
Superamerica series. There were also many other classics from a
large number of manufacturers, including Jaguar SS 100, XK120
and E-Type, Toyota 2000 GT, Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS, OSCA MT4
Maserati Ghibli Spider and an AC Cobra class, to name but a
few.
Mecum Auctions also had a display of cars from their auction at
one of the main central junctions, and amongst the cars on
display was the 330 GTS, chassis # 10913, which was once the
famous “Harrah Targa” example, and which has now been put
back to the original soft top configuration as it left the factory.
Major sponsor Acura also had a display of cars from their current
range, including the stunning new NSX in a rich metallic red,
which attracted a great deal of attention. The 2015 Best of Show
award went to a one-off 1950 Cisitalia 202 MM Cassone
Berlinetta.
