Le Mans, 17 June 2000

The participants in the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge series had the opportunity to exercise their steeds on the famous La Sarthe circuit, as a prelude to the 24 Hour Le Mans Race, which was won by Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela and Tom Kristensen for Audi. The opportunity to return to the scene of many Ferrari triumphs in one of the world's most famous races did not go unnoticed by the competitors. The majority of the series regulars subscribed to the event, with fifty one eventually taking to the track.

After the Thursday evening practice session it was David Piper in the same 250/275 LM in which he finished seventh in the 1968 24 Hour Race, that headed the times, ahead of Peter Hardman in the 330 LM Berlinetta of Harry Leventis, and David Franklin in Carlos Monteverde's 365 GTB/4C.

After a mock "Le Mans" type start the cars followed the pace car round for the installation lap, before taking a rolling start, where David Piper got bogged down and lost several places, allowing Peter Hardman to take the lead ahead of David Franklin. He maintained his position at the head of the field for the first two laps in his usual spectacular style, until a half shaft broke causing his retirement. David Franklin then took over to lead quite comfortably from the 206S of Rory Parasiliti, until David Piper got into his stride and took second place on the seventh lap, and set off after the Franklin 365 GTB/4C. However he had left his challenge too late and although he set the fastest lap of the race, he was a fraction under eight seconds adrift at the flag.

The competitors were unanimous in their praise for the event, and were grateful to have had the opportunity to drive on the fabled circuit where many of their cars had made their name.
