Monterey, 13 – 15 August 2009
The 2009 edition of RMs “Sports & Classics of Monterey” auction has been
extended by a day to incorporate the amazing selection of over fifty cars
from the Nick Alexander Woodie Collection, which will be auctioned without
reserve during the evening of Thursday 13 August. The venue will be the
same as in previous years, at the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey
Conference Centre, in the heart of downtown Monterey.
The auction will also feature a great selection of Ferrari models, with
around two dozen examples set to cross the block. Within this number
there is a 1952 225 S Vignale Berlinetta, chassis # 0168ED, which has
been in single ownership for the past 38 years, with the only cloud on its
provenance being the fitment of an early inside plug 250 GT engine.
Interestingly, at the same auction RM are also offering a 166 MM Spider
Scaglietti, chassis # 0050M/0328M, to which engine # 0168ED is fitted, so
it would be an ideal opportunity for an avid collector of early Ferraris to
reunite the car and engine. Amongst the other Ferrari offerings are an
original 365 GTB/4S Spider, chassis # 17053, a 250 GT Ellena Coupé,
chassis # 0785GT, a pair of 250 GT Series II cabriolets, chassis #s1865
GT and 2359GT, a 250 GT Coupé, chassis # 1043GT, through to more
modern offerings like a GTO (288) and an F40.
There is also an eclectic selection of other marques spanning a broad
spectrum, like a brutal looking ex-Scuderia Filipinetti 1968 Corvette Race
Car, which ran at Le Mans six times, winning its class twice. Still on the
racing scene, there is also the unique 1931 V16 Miller Race Car, which
was lost for a long time, but which has been lovingly restored to its original
configuration at what must have been enormous expense. Then there is
the 1952 Jaguar “C” Type, chassis # XKC-007, that was the first “C” Type
delivered new in the USA, and driven by Phil Hill to victory at Elkhart Lake,
providing the model with its maiden US race victory. For the more gentile
driving experience, how about a unique 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III
Henley Roadster with body by Brewster/Inskip, or a 1935 Duesenberg SJ
Disappearing Top Convertible Coupé by Murphy, for wind in your hair
motoring.
The preview for the auction starts on Wednesday 12 August at midday,
running through to Saturday 15 August, with the auction taking place on the
Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The catalogue is $100, but does
not provide admission to the auction/viewing, which requires an admission
pass costing $40. Further details can be found at www.rmauctions.com
