Class B – Antidepressants, pre-war sports cars which defied the great depression

With the great depression the diversity of manufacturers was separated in those companies that survived and the lot of small companies that faded away. Just a few years earlier the most important races saw the light of day with the 24h of Le Mans and the Mille Miglia in Italy and the marques represented in this class could be unsurprisingly found in the winners lists of those races. Most important marque of the early 1930s was without doubt Alfa Romeo and the Jano designed 8C model both in 2.3 and 2.9 litre configuration are the most sought after pre-war sports cars today. The car on show is one of the short chassis Zagato spiders from the famous Zagato collection of David Sydorick. Acquired more than a decade ago this example was superbly restored and extensively used by Sydorick in numerous driving events like the 8C Tour in the US and just recently won the Best of Show award at the Amelia Island Concours. To make things short the car also won its class at the Lake Como and was lined up with the other class winners at the terrace of the Grand Hotel during the final award dinner to remain in the spotlight when the Trofeo BMW Group, the Best of Show was announced giving this car its second major award within a few weeks.

Runner up in the class was the Mercedes-Bent 380 Special Roadster, the small brother of the 540K. Also a straight-eight with 4 litre supercharged the car featured not an in-house design but a special roadster by Erdmann&Rossi specially designed for Prince von Schaumburg-Lippe and driven on the Germany Rally, today part of a prominent Erdmann&Rossi collection. But Mercedes also won on the Italian long distance race at the Mille Miglia with the SSK in the hand of Carraciola, the short chassis version of the straight-six designed by Ferdinand Porsche. In Como one of the long chassis Tourer versions was on display with the 710 SS. Talking about the MM also brings the first winners to mind, the O.M (Officine Meccanice) based in Brescia. Today the racing versions of the O.M. traditionally open the MM Storico and the car on display was a very elegant version by Carrozzeria Castagna, the class was rounded off by a Delahaye 125 M of Figoni&Falaschi.
