One of the oldest cars in recent years on the gravel around the famous lonely tree in the gardens of the Villa d´Este was the 1908 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost with Roi de Belge coachwork by Barker. The Roi de Belge is one of the most famous designs on the Silver Ghost and together with the London-to-Edinburgh tourer maybe the most sought after on this chassis that formed the reputation of Rolls-Royce before WWI. The Silver Ghost was followed by the Phantom Model that should be the name of the top model in six different series and reappeared in today´s catalogue. At Como was a very sportive version of the Phantom II with a boat-tail design by Gurney Nutting, a very popular design of the era with a teak tail and a rumble seat that could be also used as a luggage compartment when travelling with two. The car was entered by construction machinery tycoon Sir Robert Bamford as part of his superb collection of classic cars ranging from pre-war Rolls-Royce to several sports racing cars of the 1960s. With a superb restoration this car was awarded with the Best in Class award making this on of the cars eligible for the prestigious Best of Show award at the end of the concours. Less long (just two years) was the career of the Wraith that was just build in 1938 and 1939, certainly the outbreak of the war prevented a longer production, the car on show was a Sedanca de Ville where the chauffeur was sitting outside of the luxury compartment of the owners, this car featured a hand painted rattan ornament of the side, a nightmare for every restorer when reproducing it as original. Mention of honour (or runner up in the class) became a Silver Cloud I Estate by Radford showing why this body style is also common as shooting break as the rear compartment included a set of hunting guns. The class was rounded of by a Silver Cloud III DHC.
